Hobbies

-I really enjoy reading and writing many different genres (including fiction, nonfiction, and theoretical/critical works), but in particular poetry. I take part in a private weekly poetry blog with several other very established and successful Northwest female poets and I have had my work published in several journals. (See Experience/Qualifications for publications and awards) -I have become increasingly interested in cross-stitch and embroidery. Recently, I have been commissioned and have begun to sell some of my work to friends, relatives, and on Etsy. -I recently moved from Portland, OR to Omaha, NE, and in both of these very different but very fun cities my boyfriend and I have been able to pursue our passion for live music by going to different shows and concerts. He recently began a music blog which I occasionally contribute to. -And now for the more academic one: my thesis, "Quote Culture and the Community of Mind: Towards a Critique of the Quippie," focused on specific modes of idealism and elitism in digital language use, in particular, the appropriation of quotations within social media as identity markers, belief signatures, and formulaic acts. I take great stock in and have a great interest in the responsible and creative use of language, continually reminding myself to take care in the words I use and encouraging others to always ask why a certain word or words might be used in a particular context. These ideas have been a focus of my poetry as well as some of my cross-stitch/embroidery artwork, as I think this medium is an interesting paradigm for the juxtaposition of words or their source with medium (taking for example, the new and popular notion of "subversive cross-stitch").
